A bicycle may look simple, but it can take people on extraordinary journeys. It is a symbol of fitness, freedom, adventure, and sustainable travel. Across India, cyclists have used bicycles not only for sport and adventure but also to spread important messages about the environment, health, and a cleaner future.
From a massive cyclothon in Punjab to a journey across every state and Union Territory of India, these remarkable bicycle records listed in the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records show how determination and passion can turn an ordinary ride into an extraordinary achievement.
Maximum People Participated in a Cyclothon to Promote Plastic-Free Punjab
One of the biggest cycling events for an environmental cause was organised by Fit Bikers Club, Hoshiarpur, Punjab. The club achieved a record for the maximum number of people participating in a cyclothon to promote a plastic-free Punjab.
An impressive 8,980 cyclists of different age groups came together on bicycles to spread awareness about the harmful effects of plastic and encourage people to work towards a cleaner Punjab.
The cyclothon started from Lajwanti Stadium and ended at the same venue after the cyclists travelled through different parts of the city. The large participation showed that environmental awareness can bring people of all ages together.
The event was not simply a cycling activity; it was a powerful message that communities can make a difference when they come together for a common cause.
Shortest Time to Visit All States and Union Territories on a Bicycle
Travelling across India is a huge challenge, but doing it on a bicycle requires exceptional physical and mental endurance. Mr. Vanlallawmzuala Varte of Aizawl, Mizoram, achieved a remarkable record by visiting all the States and Union Territories of India by bicycle in the shortest time to spread awareness about air pollution.
His journey, called a ride for clean air, began in Aizawl on January 25, 2024. He travelled across 28 States and 5 Union Territories, covering an incredible 17,474.38 kilometres.
During the journey, he accumulated an elevation gain of 1,13,278 metres. His actual riding days totalled 204 days, showing the enormous physical effort required to complete such a long-distance journey.
He returned to Aizawl on November 5, 2024, completing his mission to promote awareness about air pollution and encourage a cleaner and more sustainable lifestyle.
Highest Elevation Gain to Visit All States and Union Territories on a Bicycle
The same incredible journey by Mr. Vanlallawmzuala Varte also earned another remarkable record for the highest elevation gain while visiting all States and Union Territories on a bicycle.
Starting from Aizawl on January 25, 2024, Varte travelled across 28 States and 5 Union Territories before completing his journey in Aizawl on November 5, 2024.
During the expedition, he achieved a total elevation gain of 1,13,278 metres and covered 17,474.38 kilometres on his bicycle over 204 actual riding days.
The journey was more than a physical challenge. His goal was to spread awareness about air pollution and promote the idea of a clean and sustainable lifestyle.
His achievement demonstrates how cycling can be used as a powerful platform to communicate an important environmental message.
First Medical Family to Complete the Ironman Triathlon
Cycling is also an important part of some of the world’s toughest endurance events. Dr. Sampat Dumbre Patil of Pune, Maharashtra, and his family created a unique record by becoming the first medical family to complete the Ironman Triathlon together.
Dr. Patil, an Orthopaedic Surgeon, participated in the Ironman 70.3 in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna along with his wife, a Radiologist, and their daughter and son, who are MBBS students.
The event was held on September 22, 2024, and included a challenging 1.9-kilometre open-water swim, 90-kilometre cycling course, and 21.1-kilometre run.
Completing an Ironman event requires intense training, physical fitness, mental strength, and discipline. Completing it as a family makes the achievement even more special.
The family’s achievement shows how shared goals and mutual encouragement can motivate people to overcome demanding challenges.
Fastest to Cycle from Digha Sea Beach to Mount Everest Base Camp
Another extraordinary cycling achievement was accomplished by Jyotishko Biswas of West Bengal, who set a record for being the fastest to cycle from Digha Sea Beach to Mount Everest Base Camp.
His expedition began from Ramnagar, West Bengal, on February 9, 2025. He travelled towards the high mountains and finally reached Mount Everest Base Camp on March 10, 2025.
During the expedition, Biswas covered a total distance of 1,346.07 kilometres in 29 days. The journey involved difficult and rugged terrain, demanding considerable physical endurance and mental determination.
Cycling from a coastal destination to the base of the world’s highest mountain is a remarkable test of adaptability. The changing terrain and demanding conditions made the journey particularly challenging.
Biswas’s journey stands as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through preparation, courage, and persistence.
Pedalling Towards a Better Future
These bicycle records are much more than impressive distances, numbers, and timings. They represent different purposes behind cycling. For some, it is a way to promote environmental awareness. For others, it is a test of endurance, a family challenge, or an opportunity to explore the limits of human determination.
The cyclothon in Punjab brought thousands of people together for a plastic-free message. Vanlallawmzuala Varte used his bicycle to travel across India and speak about clean air. The Patil family combined cycling with swimming and running to complete a demanding international triathlon. Jyotishko Biswas took on challenging terrain on his way to Everest Base Camp.
Together, these achievements remind us that a bicycle can be much more than a means of transport. It can become a vehicle for change, awareness, fitness, adventure, and inspiration.
