The record for winning the maximum number of gold medals in a single national powerlifting championship was set by Desaraju Venkata Sankara Rao (born on June 17, 1953) of Bhadradri Kothagudem, Telangana. Having undergone bypass heart surgery in 2012, he won four gold medals in the National Masters Classic & Equipped Powerlifting Championship 2025 (under 83 kg category) at Kozhikode (Kerala), held from August 2, 2025 to August 7, 2025 (organised by Powerlifting India), at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 21 days, as confirmed on January 23, 2026.
