The world’s largest floral carpet (Pookalam) named ‘ Sneha Pookalam’ was made at Kozhikode, Kerala on August 21, 2010 as part of Onam celebrations. 1,000 volunteers led by 30 art teachers made a massive 17,622 square-feet Pookkalam at Swapna Nagari. They broke the record of a 12,000 square-feet Pookkalam created by the Kerala police at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Kochi in 2008. Around 15 tonnes of flowers were brought from Thovala in Tamil Nadu to make the Pookkalam. The flowers were of seven different kinds including dahlia, chethi and jamanthi, to represent all the continents. The colossal effort started at 10.30 am, with writers and spiritual leaders throwing fistfuls of flowers on the floor. Then the 1,000 volunteers, including several hundred students, got into the fascinating act and finished the massive Pookkalam in a record time of two hours and eight minutes.
